Fran was born and raised in Saskatchewan. A summer school art course at Emma Lake (University of Saskatchewan)
marked her first foray into the field of art. Two years at the (then) Institute of Technology & Art, Calgary,
under the guidance of W. I. Phillips and H. G. Glyde, earned her a Diploma in Fine Arts.
